RIDE ON
Abdul Vas · Gorka Mohamed
Proyecto H Contemporáneo, Madrid April 20th – May 29th 2017

This exhibition, Ride On by Abdul Vas and Gorka Mohamed, examines these two visual artists’ specific way of constructing challenging, defining pictorial presences via dissimilar poetic arrangements.

What is so fascinating about this exhibition is the way their aesthetic attentions intersect with their ability in their artistic careers to maintain and develop the tenacity needed (evoked in the Blue Ride On theme from 1976) to immerse themselves in their own obsessions and visual dilemmas. This capacity for ruthless persistence translates into pictorial artifices that establish their own time, rhythm and raison d’être; which question and reveal our contemporary era; which manage to shrewdly and spontaneously examine the tensions in this inherited visual world (with its ontological implications) that saturates and defines us. Their paintings construct unchanging presences which are impenetrable to some extent, but this impenetrability is not the result of a hidden mystery or obscure idealism but instead looks toward the very impossibility of discourse and representativeness, leaving the image within that space unfolded by the artists’ very construction.

Their artistic vision is a complex process that merges psychological elements accompanied by psychological resonances: a layer of memories grows on the image that is reconstructed in the spirit, echoes of the movement of emotions and ideas, and together this sensorial information crystallises the active psychological content of the painter’s personality. This process burgeons at its own pace, and the painter’s reaction to the theme he is addressing is expressed precisely through this perseverance.

For this reason, when we are inside one of these pictorial spaces proposed by Gorka Mohamed and Abdul Vas, we are challenged by a kind of exacerbated timelessness. This timelessness does not seek to illustrate or shed light on a given narrative thread, but instead it confronts us with lacerating existential realities from intensities that are clearly-bounded, permeated, perhaps, by a failed modernity promiscuously constituted by a raving mass culture.
